You Shouldn't Need to Learn BAQs to Get an Answer Out of Epicor Kinetic

A laptop showing a report grid with a thin blue progress bar sits on a dark wood desk beside a brass lamp, with a machine shop blurred behind it.

Your owner wants to know which customers are quietly getting slower on-time delivery. Or the sales manager wants open quote value by rep. Neither number lives on a standard Kinetic screen. So the request lands on you: "Can you build a report for that?" You open a browser tab and type how to create a baq in epicor kinetic, because you have no idea where to start and nobody on staff does either.

What a BAQ is, and why your shop ends up needing one

A BAQ is a Business Activity Query. It's how Kinetic pulls data from several tables into one view you can sort, filter, and export. Standard screens show you a job, a PO, or a customer one at a time. The moment someone wants a number that crosses those lines (late POs by supplier, quoted versus actual cost, anything the screens don't already total up), a query is the usual answer. That's a fair tool. It's just built for someone whose job is building queries.

The friction people actually describe

Read the threads on epiusers.help and the same complaints keep coming back. The BAQ editor is terrible. Saving is a nightmare. One person described spending 30 minutes and about six tries just to get a field back after it vanished. Others talk about waiting on the blue bar to finish, then re-adding Company after the whole thing reset on them. Those are their words and their frustration, and anyone who's been through it nods along. Now picture that as a side project for a controller or an ops manager who also has month-end open. There's no developer on staff to hand it to, so it sits at the bottom of the pile until someone gets annoyed enough to push through it.

What you actually wanted was an answer

Look at why you searched. You didn't wake up wanting to learn query design. You wanted one number, and a report was the only way anyone had told you to get it. Most people who go looking for BAQ tutorials are in exactly that spot. The report was never the goal. If you need the same view every week, a saved query earns its keep. If you need an answer this afternoon, building one is a long way around.

What asking the question directly looks like

With Epic One you type the question the way you'd say it to a coworker: "Which POs are past due, and who are the suppliers?" or "What did we quote this customer last time?" Epic One reads your live Kinetic data and answers. No tables to pick, no joins, no saving, no blue bar. It works through each person's own ERP login, so people see what their login already allows and nothing more. Reading is instant. Changes to your ERP are a separate matter, and a person approves every one before it happens.

Next time someone hands you a "go build a report" request, try writing the question out in plain English first. If that sentence is all you needed, you may not need a BAQ at all. To see what that would look like in your shop, tell us which ERP you run and what you want off your plate, and we'll set up your private instance and confirm the safety details before anything connects.
